CALCULATING COST FOR TELECINE / COLOR GRADING
The most frequent question we get is "How much will it cost?" If you are transferring to any tape format other than HDCam SR you need only calculate telecine charges. If you are transferring to drive you will need to add file fees. Telecine charges are the amount you will pay for the colorist to load the film on the telecine, make the appropriate color corrections and record the film to media. Telecine charges are calculated by multiplying the running time of the film, the transfer ratio and hourly rate. There is a 1/2 hour minimum for telecine time with time rounded to 15-minute increments thereafter. Unsupervised Scene-to-Scene color correction is guaranteed a 3:1 transfer ratio.
You can use the Kodak Footage Calculator to determine the running time of your film.
The capture file size can be determined by using the AJA Data Rate calculator.

Example:
I have 400ft of S8mm to be transferred in HD at 18fps. I go to the calculator and find that the running time will be 26:40. The ratio for the transfer is 3:1. I round my running time up to 30 mins and multiply by 3, this lets me know that I can expect my transfer to take 1.5 hours This will be a transfer that I can wait a couple weeks for, so I can get the "stand-by rate" of $300/hr. I multiply that rate by the 1.5 and estimate my transfer cost to be $450. Since I want to go to drive there will be file fees. I need to get a ProRes QuickTime. The capture for this footage will take a half hour which will cost $62.50. 26:40 of ProRes HD will be 41 gigabytes of data which would cost the minimum data managment charge of $30. Total file fees will be $62.50 for the capture and $30 for the data management. The estimated cost for grading/transfer is $450. File fees come to $92.50.
